Considered the gay capital of the world in the 1920s, Berlin has a long queer history and is still a vibrant hub of LGBTQ+ culture. Berlin was known for its decadence and thriving queer culture during the golden era of the Weimar Republic in the first half of the 20^th century. Now, in many ways, Berlin’s queer scene is still the largest and most vivacious in all of Europe, making it the European LGBTQ+ capital. From gay nightlife to museums to saunas, there is no end to the variety of queer culture present in Berlin.

Gay Culture 

To get a taste of Berlin’s queer history, you can walk around the Schöneberg neighborhood. In the streets surrounding the Nollendorfplatz U-bahn station, you will find memorials of the gays and lesbians who were persecuted during the second world war as well as various statues and street art dedicated to famous queer people.

For a more in-depth look into Berlin’s queer history and contemporary queer culture, you can go to the Schwules museum. This museum is also a research center that is dedicated to focusing on LGBTQ+ history and culture. Established in 1985, it was the first museum in the world to focus entirely on the queer community.

From the BDSM pride festival happening during Easter to Dyke Marches to Pink Christmas, Berliners celebrate their queerness all year round. Of course, the biggest of these festivals is the Christopher Street Day parade, which is the largest LGBTQ festival happening in Europe. Happening every July, Christopher Street Day always has the main parade with drag queens and floats sponsored by companies and speeches by politicians just like many Pride parades in North America. However, there are also alternative demonstrations that happen every year around the CDS parade. These demonstrations are primarily focused on celebrating trans people, queer migrants, and other marginalized queer people who aren’t always represented during corporate pride events.
